Greetings and welcome to the SWGEmu End of Summer update. Things have been relatively quiet from the SWGEmu Team since the Object Restructure (OR) began over a year ago, but we are pleased to announce that things are moving forward and will be back in full testing mode soon.

Object Restructure News

For those of you who might be unfamiliar with the term, the OR is a comprehensive standardization of all of the code for SWGEmu. Over the years, many different developers have all worked together to submit code to the project. While this has allowed the Developer team to make great progress in recreating the Pre-CU experience as a whole, it has made submitting and integrating new code difficult. You can think of the old code base as a huge, overstuffed filing cabinet. All of the information is in there somewhere, but everyone who put things into the cabinet used a different filing system. The OR has taken everything out of the filing cabinet, pruned files, reorganized the folders, and attached new legible labels to everything. Ramsey wrote an excellent, more technical description here.

During the OR, in addition to standardizing the code base, a decision was made to switch from MySQL to BerkeleyDB in order to both reduce CPU usage and help us achieve our goal of eliminating crash-based rollbacks. Code standards have now been set, which will significantly reduce the amount of time it will take to commit code changes to the official, public test center (TC: Nova).

Beginning in August, the OR code has been released to TC: Nova during semi-regular intervals (Please see this post: Daily OR Tests for further information about server uptimes). We are very pleased to move this code out of internal testing and onto TC: Nova. Hopefully you are just as excited to test the new, more stable code base.

We know that everyone is getting geared up for the inevitable old TC: Nova code database wipe and we are targeting some time in early September. We do not know the exact date it will be ready, but we will be pushing the OR code to TC: Nova on a permanent basis once a few more key systems are in place. You can track the progress of these changes on the SWGEmu Assembla Timeline.

Please be aware that major fixes and additions to the OR code once on TC: Nova can require database wipes. We may also have to wipe the database to “reset” the test center characters for specific testing purposes. We will do our best to give advance notice if there is one coming, but please be prepared for frequent database wipes.

Web Development

Our newest department, headed by Kaiegos, is the Web Development team. Currently, we have SWGEmu information scattered across several different sites and services. Some of these include Mantis, SWGEmu.com, SWGEmu wiki, IRC and the Events page. In the next month or so, we will be attempting to link all of the separate portions of our web presence into a single login system.

The Web Development team is currently testing the latest versions of our software along with some new pieces in a separate test bed environment. All of the SWGEmu services will be brought together under a single registration web page that will create all of your logins automatically. The goal is to consolidate your experience and logins for this project to make it more enjoyable and easier to manage by the Staff.

Mantis Bug Tracker Update

As of this weekend, the Mantis bug tracking site is now working again. One of the side effects of the old system going down was the loss of all the login information. Luckily, the database is intact, so all of the TC: Nova bugs have been closed and archived. Please report only OR bugs from now on.

Since the Web development team is working towards creating a centralized user registration system for one login to all services, please take this opportunity to re-register on the Mantis site with the same account name and password combination that you use on the forums. This will streamline the process, and eliminate any chance of you being locked out of the bug reporting system after the credentials are combined.

If you are still having issues with Mantis, please contact TAfirehawk on the forums or at tafirehawk@swgemu.com.

Staff Restructure

While the Object Restructure was underway, the SWGEmu Staff was also restructured. All of the staff positions were placed into one of two large branches: Test Center Operations and Development. If you would like to take a look at the new staff structure, an overview of the current structure can be found here.

Test Center Operations:

Odwill is the current Test Center Director, supervising this branch of the staff, with Kellina as the Support Manager, supervising the GMs and Moderators, and Max managing the Communications and Event Coordination departments. While Max is taking a short leave of absence, please feel free to contact the acting Communications Manager, El’layn.

Any and all ingame problems can be reported either using support@swgemu.com or joining #swgemusupport on irc. Please direct requests for two accounts from the same IP address to the support@swgemu.com address. If you have password or other account issues, please email community@swgemu.com.

Development:

Oru is the Development director. The Core3 Manager, TheAnswer, supervises both the Core3 Coding and Client Developer teams. TAfirehawk is the Quality Assurance (QA) manager, and Kaigeos manages the new Web Development team.

Any and all issues relating to testing can be directed to quality@swgemu.com or reported on Mantis.

27.06.2010 03:34 - SWG:ANH, Offiziell Open Source Software!
SWG:ANH, Offiziell Open Source Software!

03.06.2010 06:16 - [SWGANH] Open the Blast Doors! Open the Blast Doors!

SWG:ANH

Open the blast doors! Open the blast doors!

There's big news brewing around the SWG:ANH team lately, after a number of years of working behind closed doors it's been decided to bring everything out into the open and continue on with our efforts as a true open source project! Starting June 26th, 2010 on the 7 year anniversary of the Star Wars Galaxies launch, the SWG:ANH team will be transitioning to a open source project.

First, let's just get the one thing most people will ask out of the way up front:

This is not a production release and we are not providing any support to individuals or groups who attempt to treat it as such. If you're reading this news and expecting to immediately hop on or create a galaxy and start playing you'll likely be disappointed as that is not the goal of this current milestone.

So what is the purpose of all this activity?

To quote Steve Ballmer... Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers!** Over the years there have been many who have wanted to contribute and were not able to due mostly to two reasons:

1) Drama between SWG related projects
2) Lack of knowledge/lack of real world experience

The first reason isn't much of an issue these days, none of the core team cares about rivalry or "who wins the race." We love programming and we love Star Wars Galaxies and that's about it (literally, some of us eat, sleep and breath those two things!), from our perspective anyone with those same loves and who wants to contribute can and should be able to, regardless of previous allegiances. However, that was the way of things during the early days of the emulation scene and it prevented many who would have been glad to contribute from being able to do so.

The second roadblock that kept potential developers from making it onto the team was due to the project being closed source. In a closed source environment a project is run much like it would be a commercial game studio (without many of the benefits such as a salary and favorite caffeinated beverages on tap) and requires the team to be made up of developers with real world knowledge and experience. This prevented those who are just getting into programming or those with limited amounts of time from being able to contribute.

Over the last year on the development side of things we've been steadily incorporating best practices for development to help improve the quality of code and to bring focus to development. These practices include better use of the version control system (including a move to a new vcs), performing automated builds and conducting peer-reviews of contributed code, all of which complement the quality assurance testing and bug tracker usage that was already taking place. We found that with each of these changes came increased productivity, renewed interest in the project, and more importantly a new-found interest in collaboration. The more progress that was made the more evident it was that we could and should be making everything available to anyone that is interested in helping out. Unlike any other time in the project's history we now have all the tools and practices in place to effectively take on contributions from community developers.

This leads us to several months back when the entire team had reached the decision that it was time to begin transitioning to open source. Since then we've been hard at work further refining our processes for development including how to manage public testing, holding bug fixing sprints and managing our release cycles; all in the effort to make it easy for anyone in the community who is interested in contributing to be able to do so.

It is an exciting time for the project with a number of interesting things in store for the community at large as we approach our official date for going open source on June 26th, 2010. In the meantime we ask everyone to keep things in perspective: We are a team entirely interested in the development of this game and there's no room for drama. This is a time for open collaboration between those with a common purpose and those just wishing to have a good time doing what they love.

Thanks to all who have made this effort possible and here's looking forward to an exciting few months at SWG:ANH!

Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers!

27.04.2010 20:47 - [SWGEMU] TC:NOVA Wipe Poll Results
Hello again EMU community.

The past few days have been crazy around here. We took this polling endeavor seriously and we were hoping for a better outcome. However, the team has been bombarded with concerns and questions by the community over the wipe poll and the possible outcomes. Therefore, due to voting disparities with new accounts, adverse affect on the community of the polling process, and unaddressed issues, we are calling off the poll and the possibility of a wipe. We will stick to the original statement and wipe for the OR when the time comes. As always, we are committed to providing you all with a solid community and game environment. We thought that holding this poll would give the community a voice and a chance at a little more participation.

What we now realize is it may cause more damage then good in the end. To our entire community, we are sorry if this poll in any way affected you adversely, and we will assure you that a similar situation will not happen in the future.

The SWGEmu Team.

26.04.2010 05:21 - [SWGEMU] TC:NOVA Wipe Proposal
Greetings SWGEmu community. It is not a secret that there have been some pretty nasty hacks and exploits uncovered over the past few months. Many of these have been fixed but the damage was already done. While development continues on the OR we are still committed to providing our community a functioning test and play environment. We feel that a full server wipe at this point in time would allow our community to experience that environment again. It would also allow us the possibility of testing some items for the OR, a pre-test if you will. Since we had originally aimed for the next wipe being at the completion of the OR, we wanted to ask our terrific community if they would be for or against this wipe.

The bad news, everyone will be starting over with nothing. We know many of you have poured hours and hours into your characters here on the TC and we don't take that lightly. Although your characters progress will be gone, the information we have learned along the way is not.

The good news, with the major exploits out of the equation we can collect more valuable information in preparation for the OR. We also may be able to add more features to TC that wouldn't be possible on the current TC. Down the road this could lead to decreased development time which is always a good thing.

Please vote! Please provide feedback in a post with your vote. We are watching this closely and your opinion is important to us.

*Please note* Starting soon, you will not be able to log on to TC until you vote.

25.04.2010 03:27 - [SWGANH] The SWG:ANH Scoop – April 24, 2010
The Friends and Family Preview/Stress Test was held today on our test center. In fact, it is still in progress until midnight!

Everything came together just in time for the opening of the TC today at 2:00 pm EST. There were 2 remaining bugs that might have spoiled the day. One was a problem with the tutorial and the other involved the commands for arranging furniture that were not having the desired effect. Both issues were corrected in the final minutes. What a relief!

Things got underway on Tatooine when Nebula gathered a large band together in Bestine. They played in front of the starport where visitors would arrive. Thanks to his excellent skill as a bandleader and some hastily prepared macros, the music was divine. Seph's dancing was a marvelous addition!

It was the band performance that helped us find a crash bug! 'Yours truly' was a member of the band, but I logged out just before the band struck up a new number. Apparently my character, though she was in an LD state, began to play with the band. When the band did a flourish, my toon disappeared and the TC came down. The observant Nebula saw what had happened and was able to recreate the bug later in the day. So now we are well on the way to a fix!

Factories and harvesters were operating, people were surveying and sampling. There were many duels fought, many incapacitations, and even a few clonings! I saw folks in bare knuckle brawls with rills. I am sure that testers will be posting their fraps, so you will get to see some of the day's excitement. There was even a streaker!

Thanks to all the SWGANH staff who worked diligently to get ready. Special mention should go to Snow, Apathy, Schmunzel, Rouse, Jay and Powerking who worked tirelessly to get the TC prepared. Also, many thanks to Hakry who never tires and never says no when asked to take on another task. Silent-X, Berix, and Aeludor joined our staff for the day and pitched in with Hakry to moderate our public irc chat and we are grateful for their assistance!

We will continue to hold stress tests in the future and hope to invite more and more people to attend. Please keep an eye on our forums for further information in the coming days and weeks.

Overheard in the public irc:

[14:50] I'm like [censored], You guys did a great job

[17:23] damn i gotta hand it to you guys. pardon the language, but this is f'ing impressive

[18:00] well i can honestly say that functionality wise it has surpassed my expectations

Good things are happening at SWGANH!

07.04.2010 03:01 - [SWGANH] The SWGANH Scoop - April 6, 2010
/me paints a target on herself and steps out in front of the forum readers...

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. I am here to advise you that we are holding off for a bit on our Friends and Family Preview. The reason for this is that we fixed some stuff, but that broke some other stuff. And now we're going to fix that stuff. Thank you." /bow2

Now that's done. So on to happier news!

We have three new developers that have joined us in the past few weeks. Bhelly and Dman are professionals in the mmo field and we are fortunate to have them joining us at SWG:ANH. We have also added developer Seiun during this period. We welcome our new devs and we look forward to testing your codez!

Tester Hoonius distinguished himself by creating a wonderful new launcher for SWG:ANH! It is a beautiful thing and it allows the user to select from among our four or five server options with ease.

Tester Dressari has returned to SWG:ANH now that his computer is back in fighting form! We are glad you are back Dressari!

This scoop will be short as we have all been so busy! But I will leave you with screenies of a couple of bugs that were recently fixed. I hope they will give you a chuckle.

I guess I need a shovel...

That Jawa beer can really hit you hard!

Author: apathy
Date: Thu Apr 1 11:24:13 2010 -0400

Closed out all remaining bugs and implemented the rest of the game features and professions.

This is the final Commit done by our all beloved Apathy this morning!
And it is not without some regret that I can finally announce, that as of this noon we are finally GOLD!!!!

3 Years and I cannot tell you how many months did it take us. Tears and Joy, Desperation and hope and what a ride it has been.
Over 300.000 (threehundredthousand) lines of code, a database to make even Oracle blush and a server so new and shiny you need sunglassess to even look at it.

While we are celebrating our release (Which by pure chance fell on this rather suspicious data) you should already brace yourselves for the ride of your lives comming to a community far far away ....

(erm rather next door to you in the intarwebs )

Stop! Stop! Stop!
You can't continue until you fix these bugs!!!

The last week has been all about halting further implementation of new features, and ridding the server of bugs. The QA Team along with The Developers decided that all during last week, all efforts would be put into bug squashing! That means making sure there is nothing that would cause the server crash as well as fixing anything that is major or may be an issue during a preview.

Each Developer took on his, or her, fair share of bugs this week as The QA Team did their best to test each fix as it hit the Test Center! The main goal of this testing was to allow a internal test preview with all the current staff! Great things came of this, and much was learned. The internal testing went very well and all of the team needs to be thanked for their hard work and dedication!

The Internal Testing
Everyone began gathering on the server around 2pm EST, which was hosted by Jay who put in lots of personal time to setup an awesome host for us, and began by grouping up and grinding up some skills. There were some bumps and last minute fixes, but they were quickly fixed by The Developers. Then the testing got exciting when Mugly brought along all of his friends to see how the server handles a bit of load! Well lets just say its the first time I personally have never seen such a site, and the server handled amazingly! Here is a video of some screenshots and video from the test!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdnvolZDSrE&=22

What is next?
It was decided that this week again will be dedicated to more bug fixes and stability reinforcements! Everyone is working hard to fix bugs so we can begin holding open previews during the upcoming weekends! This weekend it is planned for our "Friends and Family" preview in which all past and present SWGANH Team members will receive and invite to the server! This again will give us more information for an open preview.

Many things are in the works at SWGANH!
